Simple, safe and reliable: Innovative system for igniting flammable objects, such as torches and pyrotechnics
Abstract
The presented invention makes it possible to ignite fireworks and other flammable objects in a particularly simple and safe way – with just one pull of the hand. Ignition is initiated completely; a lighter/match is not required.background
Everyone is familiar with the small fuses on fireworks and the difficulty of lighting them in wind or rain. If the fuse repeatedly goes out and is too short when relighting, there is a risk of premature activation of the firework, which can lead to injuries such as burns. Or the firework may become unusable (despite having a spare fuse), which is particularly annoying with expensive products.
Even with standard flares, lighting them with conventional ignition sources like lighters or matches often requires considerable patience. So-called pyrotechnic distress flares frequently require complex operating steps and are generally unsuitable for home use. If these flares cannot be ignited, this inevitably leads to significant safety risks and, in the worst case, to life-threatening situations.
Due to the lack of a simple and reliable ignition system that can be operated safely without tools, the disadvantages described above have so far been accepted.
Innovation / Solution
The new technology aims to enable particularly simple, quick, and safe ignition of a firing pin. This is intended to function reliably, especially in emergency situations – for example, with a distress flare. A special friction surface is applied to a sleeve that holds the firing pin; when passed by the round head, this surface ignites it. This can be done easily by hand, and the frictional forces within the system are sufficient for ignition. No external open flame or similar source is required. Figure 1 illustrates the technology using a torch as an example. The casing is preferably rotationally symmetrical with a round base and can be made of cardboard, for example. Positioning the firing head inside the casing in its home position ensures optimal protection of the moisture-sensitive primer from ex-ternal influences. This also prevents accidental ignition. The defined movement of the sleeve from the home position to the ignition position ensures that the friction surface is guided past the firing head with a controlled speed and a defined contact pressure, thus enabling reliable friction-induced ignition.Benefits
